Part-time Fitness Instructor – Down East locations

The Job

Carteret County Government, Leon Mann, Jr. Enrichment Center is seeking Part-time Fitness Instructors to teach classes at Down East locations.  Do you enjoy working with the senior population?  If you want to assist our Senior Center participants, the Part-time Fitness Instructor job may be the role for you!

Classes are a combination of Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program & Enhance Fitness.  Training & certifications for the classes will be available.

The Job Description

General Statement of Duties
Performs athletic and recreation work assisting with the operation of a Health and Fitness program with Aging Services.

Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing and/or coordinating instruction, leadership and direction of fitness and wellness programs for older adults within the County. The employee secures and communicates with appropriate site representatives for activities and obtains equipment and supplies necessary to complete activities. This position reports the Aging Services Director.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Coordinates and instructs fitness and wellness programs for Carteret County residents age 50 and older.
Plans, organizes, implements, and conducts fitness and wellness activities.
Secures site for the programs to be held and adheres to the host site’s rule and regulations for usage.
Enforces and adheres to departmental policies and procedures.
Reports complaints, problems, safety issues and/or injuries to the department director as soon as possible.
Provides reports, as required, to the department director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the philosophy, principles, practices, and techniques of professional fitness and wellness work.
Considerable knowledge of techniques and disciplines of fitness and wellness activities. 
Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and implement a fitness and wellness program suitable for the program audience.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, host site employees, and the general public.

Physical Requirements
Work requires the consistent exertion of up to 20 pounds of force.
Work regularly requires sitting and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking, speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, standing, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
Work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception, and peripheral vision.
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED with considerable experience in a fitness instruction setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire. 
Possession of First Aid, CPR and AED certifications preferred.
Possess fitness instructor license/certification in intended program.
