The Job

The Job Description

General Statement of Duties

Performs intermediate, advance human support work by providing counseling services for victims and their families/significant others of sexual abuse and sexual assault.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Provides short and long-term crisis therapy for victims of sexual assault and for their families/significant others.
Offers support and information for parents and significant others of victims or secondary victims.
Provides emotional support during and after a crisis.
Facilitates support groups for primary and secondary victims.
Creates and maintains accurate program records involving statistics on victims, crimes and services delivered.
Shares crisis response on-call and phone duties with other program staff and volunteers.
Collaborates with other human services, law enforcement and court personnel involved in each case.
Accompanies client in court to provide support during stressful proceedings.
Develops and maintains a network of resources.

Recruitment and Selection Guidelines
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of theories, practices and techniques of clinical counseling.
Comprehensive knowledge of clinical practices and techniques effective with adult victims (primary and secondary) of sexual abuse.
Comprehensive knowledge of the criminal justice system process and procedures.
Considerable skill in clinical intervention with adult rape crisis victims and secondary victims.
Considerable knowledge of and demonstrated skill in supervising work of volunteer and part-time counselors.
Considerable knowledge of community human resource agencies, services provided, and the professional network to assist clients.
Thorough knowledge of the emotional and psychological impact of rape/sexual assault of adult, child, male and female victims.
Demonstrated skill in accurately assessing needs of clients during crisis, to determine options, and to making referrals as appropriate.
Ability to train and manage volunteer counselors.
Ability to exercise sound judgment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, families, various social, health, medical, etc. agencies, criminal justice system, and personnel in the County, peers, supervisor and the general public.
Ability to express ideas, concepts, and plans effectively, both in oral and written forms.

Physical Requirements
Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching, tasting and smelling, pushing, pulling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting.
Work has standard vision requirements.
Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, work has no exposure to environmental conditions.
Work occasionally requires exposure to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Master’s degree in social work, psychology or counseling with professional licensure to practice therapy at the individual level, and extensive experience working in the areas of child/adult sexual abuse/assault, community health, or mental health; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
