Summer Camp Counselor
The Job
The Carteret County Parks & Recreation department is seeking a Summer Camp Counselor for the upcoming summer! One counselor is needed for Adventure Camp Down East. If you are looking to spend your summer working with kids, being creative, and you have a fun, energetic attitude – this opportunity is for you! Summer Camp Counselors are part of an amazing team where everyone has the same goal – creating a positive, fun environment and ensuring the campers have the best summer ever. The Location
Adventure Camp, Down East, NC.
- Down East Adventure Camp - Camp for ages 11 - 15 years old. Meet in Smyrna each morning (Smyrna Elementary School or Eastern Park - still being determined) and are transported on buses for field trips throughout the county.
The Details
$15.00 per hour
Seasonal employment – June through mid-August. 35 - 40 hours per week. Four days per week. No weekends!
Must be 18 years old or older & a high school graduate.

The Job Description
General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible human support work planning, organizing, and supervising daily activities of up to 30 campers. Position is seasonal from June through August.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising a variety of recreational programs for young campers ages 6-10 years old. This employee is responsible for monitoring and keeping campers busy, and managing behavioral issues and accidents. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Program Coordinator and is evaluated in terms of program effectiveness, observation, periodic discussions, and public feedback.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each day, such as crafts, nature, songs, games, etc. This includes time spent outdoors, on activity bus, and field trips.
- Directly supervises up to 30 campers at all times; to and from field trips/activities and while participating in camp activities and field trips.
- Acts as positive role model to campers, demonstrating high energy and tolerance to children’s active behavior.
- Identifies and responds to camper behavior issues.
- Communicates with parents about participant’s experiences and reports concerns to Camp Leadership.
- Ensures Recreation Center is kept clean and organized.
- Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
- Enforces safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes, but is not limited to, being responsible for camper’s safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- If applicable, maintains constant surveillance of pool area/body of water and respond immediately to emergency situations.
- Participates in staff meetings.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to enforce all safety guidelines associated with camp and all program areas, including, but not limited to, being responsible for camper’s safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- Thorough knowledge of surveillance procedures for pool/pool area and bodies of water and ability to respond to emergency situations immediately.
- General knowledge of special needs, medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems of campers and ability to act according to directions provided by parent or guardian.
- Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities.
- Ability to work as a member of a team and have the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
- Ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, swimming, team building initiatives, physical games, and activities.
- Ability to remain alert, responsive, and attentive during the duration of the shift.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and/or oral form.
- Ability to follow directions and be flexible with change.
- Skilled in organization and communication.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, community agencies and the general public.
- Ability to instruct and maintain order among participants.
Physical Requirements
- Work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, and climbing or balancing.
- Work requires close vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, peripheral vision, and distance vision.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instruction to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
- Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and exposure to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
- Performs related duties as required.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and 18 years of age or older.
Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
Position may require some evening work.
First Aid and CPR Certifications required upon hire.
